Site PromotionTargeted Web Site Promotion - 5 Keys to Web Site PromotionBy Raymond NesaPromoting websites has never been easier yet more complicated at the same time. While you still have basically the same promotional choices you used to, they have grown up into somewhat difficult mechanisms to understand and use. To help you sort through the complexities, here are 5 keys to your website promotions.1. Build a good website.By this, I mean begin with a visually pleasing design. No screaming colors and flashing banners—those are just too 1999. After you have a good design, place content that is clear, relevant, and reader friendly. This will help the search engine spiders lock onto your site.2. Register your site.If you register early with Google, Yahoo, and MSN (even before your website is done), you will have a jump start on getting it indexed. Don’t wait until it’s finished because it can take months to begin appearing on search results.3. Get backlinks. If you have found a related website, ask for a link to your own site. The more backlinks you have the more important the search engines will think your site is. However, don’t trade your links—if you link to someone who links to you, the search engines will frown upon you and possibly eliminate you from the search results.4. Blog it, Baby!Get on blogs and forums and promote your website. If you dedicated only 15 minutes per day to this activity, you will end up ahead. It’s as much consistency as it is content.5. Write some articles.Write articles that you can offer to other websites for free. Even if you can’t write well, hire it done. Then get a backlink in exchange. Not only will you gain importance to the search engines, you gain importance to your readers as an expert in your field.Do you want to learn more about how I do it? Search Engines
Although Search engines and directories appear to be the same when you're using either of the services to look up something, they differ in how they acquire their information. Search engines are run by automated programs (called "spiders," "robots," "crawlers," or "slurp") that go from site to site, recording and following all of the links that they find along the way. Whereas directories will only list the URLs for pages that you submit (such as your home page), search engines will eventually find and list every page of your site, provided it has been able to reach your site by following another link.
Because there is no way to know when a search engine would find you on its own (in fact, it would never find you if there are no links to your site), you should submit your site directly via online forms that the services provide at their sites. Keep in mind, if you submit just your home page, the spiders will have a starting point that will allow them to search your entire site. Usually, search engines use descriptions found in the body of the pages themselves, rather than allowing you to designate a special description and keywords.
Be aware: People who find your site on a search engine may not enter your site through the home page. They may arrive deep in some obscure corner of your site. Make your site's navigational elements helpful so people can quickly get to your HOME PAGE, regardless of their original point of entry to your site.
Probably the most common way to publicize your site and generate traffic is to submit it to search engines (i.e. Google) and internet directory (i.e. Yahoo!). Most of these sites have a form you can fill out to submit your site. To save yourself some time, you can try a service that submits your site to multiple search engines and internet catalogs by filling out just one form. There are many of these services out there, such as www.submit-it.com.
